Have You Ever LOST a BIG Fish? This Is Realistic Fishing
Fishing light tackle with a small jig and Gulp Minnow is a good way to catch bluegill, but every once in a while something much bigger grabs the bait. That’s exactly what happened on this trip.
I was catching plenty of bluegill when I hooked into a much larger fish. The little jig had a very thin, sharp hook, and the fish managed to get me wrapped around a tree. With that much pressure on the light hook, it eventually bent out and the fish got away.
I’ll never know exactly what I lost, and that’s probably the worst part.
When you’re fishing a small Gulp Minnow for bluegill, hooking a bigger fish is part of the fun. The same light tackle that makes catching panfish enjoyable can make landing a big fish around trees and other cover difficult.
I still caught a bunch of bluegill, so losing one fish wasn’t going to ruin the trip. Sometimes you lose the big one. That’s fishing. I kept going and caught the fish that were still in front of me.

I Kept Fishing Because The Show Must Go On! (Gulp Minnow Rig)
Some fishing trips make you work just to catch anything. I started this one fishing a Rapala from the bank because I suspected there were smaller baitfish in the area. It didn’t matter. I couldn’t get a bite.
Instead of spending the whole trip doing the same thing, I moved to another lake and changed my approach.
That’s when I switched to a Gulp Minnow rig.
The move and lure change finally produced some fish. I caught a young largemouth bass on the Gulp Minnow and followed it up with two bluegill.
Three fish after trying two different locations isn’t exactly an amazing day, but it’s better than getting skunked. A small Gulp Minnow is one of the baits I use when I’m willing to catch bass, bluegill or whatever else might be interested in a little minnow.
Sometimes realistic fishing means changing locations, downsizing the lure and working for the few bites you can get.

This Dock Was IMPOUNDED By the Government? (Realistic Fishing)
I went fishing with the travel combo again, but catching fish wasn’t the most interesting thing that happened this time. Actually, I wasn’t catching anything.
While walking around the park, I came across a dock sitting up on the bank with a big yellow sign attached to it. According to the sign, the dock had been impounded by the U.S. Government.
I’ve seen plenty of strange things while fishing over the years, but I don’t remember ever seeing an impounded dock.
The fishing might have been a bust, but finding something like this at least gave me something interesting to investigate while I was there. That’s part of fishing public areas from the bank. You never really know what you’re going to run into.

Testing a NEW TRAVEL FISHING COMBO! Can I Catch a BASS With This?
A subscriber sent me a collapsible travel fishing rod and reel combo, so there was only one reasonable way to test it. Take it to the lake and see whether I could actually catch a bass with it.
I started with some small plastic minnows but couldn’t get anything interested. Then I switched to a dice bait and kept working my way along the bank.
Eventually I caught a largemouth bass next to a dock. A few yards farther down the bank, I caught another one.
That gave the collapsible travel combo a real test instead of just looking at it in the studio. It handled two largemouth bass and made it through the trip without giving me any major problems.
I wouldn’t call this travel rod and reel the top of the food chain, but it did what I asked it to do. For a compact fishing combo that I wasn’t sure about when I started, catching two bass was a pretty decent result.

Why Go Bass Fishing In The Morning? I Want To CATCH MORE FISH!
Getting out early has been working pretty well for me, especially while the weather is still hot. On this trip I was the only fisherman out there, and I started with a soft plastic minnow on a jig head.
That little minnow produced two largemouth bass, including a nice one around a pound and a half.
Later I switched to a small swimbait and started catching fish again. This time I landed two shellcrackers, a big bluegill and another largemouth bass.
That’s three bass along with some good panfish on one morning trip.
Fishing early also means cooler air and water compared with later in the day. That’s enough reason for me to get out there before the heat gets bad, especially when the fish are cooperating too.
If you’re struggling to catch fish during hot weather, changing the time you go fishing might be worth trying before you start changing everything in your tackle box.

I Caught SO MANY Bass For FIVE CENTS Each! (THIS Is How I Did It)
My fifty-cent Temu urchin bait finally met its end.
I had already caught more than ten largemouth bass on the same cheap lure, which worked out to less than five cents per bass. I caught another bass on this trip, bringing the final total for that one lure to eleven.
Then I got the lure caught in a bush, ended up with a massive backlash and lost it.
After all the bass that lure survived, a bush was what finally took it out.
I tied on another fifty-cent Temu urchin bait, but by then I had wasted time digging around in the bushes, dealing with the backlash and rigging another lure. I didn’t catch anything else on the replacement.
Still, eleven largemouth bass from one fifty-cent lure is hard for me to complain about. The original urchin bait lasted through multiple fishing trips and kept catching bass until I finally lost it.
