Playing Black Bass on NES, The Challenges of Trout Stocking Day & Tough Winter Creek Fishing

Bass Fishing at Home! Can Fishing Skills Win in Black Bass on NES?

Fishing Lake Japan for Black Bass NES

Sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate, but that doesn’t mean fishing has to stop. Today, I’m bass fishing at home—taking on Lake Japan in the classic Black Bass game on NES!

This is the second tournament in the game, and I need to catch a solid limit of bass to advance. The challenge? Figuring out which lures and strategies will work best in this pixelated fishing world.

I start off with the pencil bait, but after a few unsuccessful casts, I switch to a spoon. After moving the boat around to different spots, I finally start catching fish. A few look like solid qualifiers, but unfortunately, it’s not enough to move on to the next round.

Even though I didn’t win, this old-school fishing game is still a fun way to pass the time when real fishing isn’t an option. The mechanics might be simple, but there’s a real strategy to catching big bass in this game.

If you’ve ever played Black Bass, how far did you make it? Do you think real-world fishing knowledge helps in video game fishing? Let’s hear it in the comments!

Why NOT To Fish For Trout on Stocking Day

Why shouldn’t you fish for trout on stocking day? A lot of people assume it’s the best time to catch easy fish, but that’s not always the case. Today on Realistic Fishing, I put that idea to the test—and the results aren’t great.

As soon as I get to the river, I see a crowd of anglers huddled near the dam, all hoping to reel in fresh-stocked trout. Instead of joining them, I take a different approach and head downstream through the woods to find a quieter spot. Armed with a simple drift rig, I try my luck using artificial corn and PowerBait Power Eggs. The current is moving just enough to carry my bait through prime trout territory—or so I thought.

Cast after cast, nothing happens. Worse yet, I keep losing bait to snags on the bottom. After burning through too many Power Eggs, I decide to take a walk and see if anyone else is having luck. Surprisingly, the answer is no. Even with dozens of anglers tossing every lure and bait imaginable, no one seems to be landing fish. So, what’s the deal?

Are the trout in shock from being transported? Are they just too disoriented to eat? If you’ve ever wondered why some people struggle to catch trout right after a stocking, this video breaks it down.

I Tried Fishing in a COLD Winter Creek (Fishing in a Small Creek)

With winter in full force, big lake fishing has been slow. So, I decided to switch things up and try my luck in a cold winter creek. Would the fish be active? Or was I wasting my time?

For this challenge, I went with a super simple setup:

  • Small hook
  • Pinch-on sinker
  • A tiny red worm

Since deep, open water wasn’t producing, I figured a shallow creek with steady current might still hold fish. My goal was to find any sign of life in the freezing water—and after some patience, I finally did.

I ended up catching four fish, including two common shiners and two stonerollers. Sure, they weren’t giant bass or trout, but at least something was biting! The freezing temperatures made things tough, but this proves that even small creeks can hold surprises in winter.

If you’re looking for a fishing challenge during the colder months, don’t overlook the tiny streams and creeks. You might not catch a trophy, but you’ll at least stay in the game while waiting for warmer days.
